As a DC wedding photographer, I get to capture so many incredible celebrations, but Tori and Ken’s District Winery wedding was one for the books. Their day was filled with non stop laughter, cheering, and dancing—exactly the kind of high-energy, joyful celebration that makes weddings so special.
Tori and Ken’s love story is one of resilience and devotion. They first connected on Hinge while Tori was planning her move from California to DC. Ken was eager to find a window to meet as soon as she moved to the city, not wanting to risk her possibly meeting anyone else. Not long after their relationship began, Ken’s service in the Air Force led them into a year of long-distance. Their only way to stay in touch was through handwritten letters. That time apart only strengthened their bond, making their reunion and life together in DC even more meaningful.
From the moment I arrived at District Winery, the energy was infectious. Though the chilly and windy spring day kept us mostly indoors, we were able to make portraits easily around the beautiful winery. Tori and Ken’s wedding party brought nothing but good vibes, hyping them up every step of the way.
One of the most powerful moments of the day was when they jumped the broom during the ceremony. This tradition dates back to when marriage was denied to black couples during slavery, and they instead jumped over a broom to symbolize their union. It also represents ‘sweeping away the old’ and beginning a new life together as a couple. As they took that meaningful leap, the room erupted in cheers, setting the tone for the celebration to come.
The night continued with their District Winery wedding reception. From heartfelt toasts to a packed dance floor, the night was filled with love and celebration. Tori and Ken’s sweet, goofy personalities shined through every moment, making it a night their guests (and I) will never forget.
Capturing their spring wedding at District Winery was such an honor, especially knowing Tori from our undergrad years at UVA. Their love, their joy, and their incredible energy made this DC wedding one of my favorites to date.
