Fatimah and Matthew celebrated with over 500 people at their two day Nigerian-American wedding in Richmond. The couple wanted a celebration that honored both their Nigerian and American cultures. The weekend began with a vibrant Yoruba Engagement Ceremony. Friday’s traditional ceremony featured a rich color palette of purples, burgundy, blues, and white, with guests donning aso ebi attire. The festivities included Yoruba music, symbolic presentations of the families, and the lively tradition of spraying cash—a joyful expression of love and support.
On Saturday, the Jefferson Hotel provided the perfect elegant setting for their ceremony and reception that was largely Western but still featuring many guests in Nigerian fashion. Fatimah walked down the aisle in a timeless Martina Liana A-line gown, while Matthew looked dapper in a light grey suit. The couple incorporated personal touches throughout the day, from a ceremony led partly by Fatimah’s father to cocktail napkins printed with trivia about their love story. Their first dance to “Strawberries” by Caamp was a highlight of the evening, followed by a lively celebration surrounded by family and friends.
When Matthew matched with Fatimah on Bumble, he didn’t hesitate to change his dinner plans to meet her for the first time. Their connection was instant, leading to a first date that neither wanted to end. “We extended the date again, and again and again…” Fatimah recalls. From that moment on, their love story unfolded beautifully, culminating in a stunning Nigerian-American wedding at The Jefferson Hotel in Richmond.
When it came time to propose, Matthew sought the blessing of Fatimah’s parents and carefully orchestrated a heartfelt moment in a sculpture garden, with hidden friends and a photographer capturing the surprise. As if the moment wasn’t magical enough, the celebrations continued at their favorite restaurant, The Broken Tulip, where their families awaited to share in their joy.
Reflecting on their multicultural wedding, Fatimah shares, “Plan together! We made every decision as a team, which made the two-year process fun and less stressful.” Their wedding was a perfect blend of tradition, love, and unforgettable moments, truly embodying the beauty of a Nigerian-American wedding in Virginia.
