Kat and Wade’s UVA engagement session featured their alma mater, the University of Virginia. The couple are both grads of the Class of 2016, and met while studying at UVA. We swapped stories about our times at UVA – I love exploring Grounds with fellow Hoos!
We began our session in the gardens, and also explored areas all around UVA’s Lawn and Rotunda. See if you can spot one of our famous Ginko trees! Ahead of their session, Kat and Wade mentioned they were nervous about posing, but I never would’ve guessed it from how easily they smiled and laughed with each other during the session.
I admire how deeply this couple shares a passion to do their part to better the world. They are incredibly eco-conscious in their daily lives, and I saw these decisions on the wedding day as well. Their shared interests nurtured a deep bond, which later would lead to their 2018 engagement while in India on a yoga retreat.
As we were catching up at the beginning of their session, the couple shared a surprise with me – they had actually already gotten married! This was just 2 days before their Montfair Resort wedding by this point (it’s never too late to schedule your engagement session!). They chose to elope in DC earlier that month in protest of Virginia’s antiquated marriage license process, which required couples to select their race on the application.
The good news is – just 5 days prior, Virginia removed this requirement from their applications. So their session turned out to be a post-elopement/pre-wedding couples session (if someone has a better name for this, let me know haha). It was a fun surprise to share and a beautiful statement to share and stand for marriage equality.
